What to Expect During Your
Thermal Hog Hunt
A thermal hog hunt is an exciting and unique hunting experience that takes advantage of modern technology to pursue wild hogs at night. Here’s what you can expect:
Pre-Hunt Preparation
Equipment Check You’ll be outfitted with thermal imaging scopes or devices that detect heat signatures, allowing you to spot hogs in complete darkness. Your guide will explain how to use the equipment and interpret the thermal images you’ll see.
Safety Briefing Expect a thorough safety discussion covering night hunting protocols, communication signals, and shooting lanes. Night hunting requires extra caution and discipline.
The Hunt Itself
Timing Most thermal hog hunts begin around dusk and continue into the night when hogs are most active. Plan for 4 hours in the field.
Spotting Hogs Through thermal imaging, hogs appear as bright white or colored shapes against cooler backgrounds. You’ll learn to distinguish hogs from other animals by their distinctive body shape and movement patterns.
Approach and Setup
- Hunts may be conducted from blinds, vehicles, or on foot
- Expect slow, deliberate movements to get within shooting range
- Wind direction is critical—hogs have an excellent sense of smell
The Shot Your guide will help you identify the best shooting opportunities. Thermal scopes allow for precise shot placement even in total darkness.
What to Bring
- Warm, dark clothing in layers
- Comfortable boots
- Any personal firearms (if not provided)
- Snacks and water
- Red or green headlamp (won’t spook hogs like white light)
Success Factors
Thermal hog hunting typically has high success rates because:
- Hogs are most active at night
- Thermal technology gives hunters a significant advantage
- Wild hog populations are often abundant
- Multiple hogs can be taken in one night
